Why Gutter Cleaning Matters Before a Valley Winter

June 18, 2026 · PropertyWorx

Gutters are one of those things nobody thinks about until they're causing a problem, and in Nova Scotia, that problem usually shows up in winter. If your gutters are packed with leaves and pine needles heading into the cold months, you're setting yourself up for trouble.

What clogged gutters actually cause

When water can't drain, it has to go somewhere. Through a Valley winter, that means:

  • Ice damming — water backs up, freezes at the roof edge, and forces meltwater up under your shingles
  • Overflow — water spills over the side and pools against your foundation
  • Rotted fascia and soffits — constant moisture eats away at the wood behind the gutter
  • Wet basements — water dumping right next to the house finds its way in

None of those are cheap to fix, and all of them start with a gutter that couldn't drain.

Why fall is the time

The best time to clear gutters in the Valley is late fall, after the leaves have dropped but before the first hard freeze. Clean them then and they'll carry water and snowmelt all winter the way they're supposed to. Leave it, and that wet pile of leaves freezes solid and you're stuck with it until spring.

What we do

Our gutter cleaning is straightforward: we hand-clear all the debris, flush the downspouts to make sure they actually drain, and bag and haul everything away. While we're up there we'll flag anything sagging or loose so it doesn't turn into a bigger job.
